A calmer way to get treatment done

Sleep dentistry isn’t a treatment on its own — it’s a way of delivering the care you need.

For some people, the barrier isn’t the dentistry — it’s getting through the appointment. Sleep dentistry removes that barrier, so treatment that once felt impossible becomes something you can rest through.

Continuity of care

Your dentist from Norlane Dental is alongside you for the entire procedure. The person who plans your treatment is the person who carries it out — with a qualified medical anaesthetist managing your comfort and safety throughout.

The comfort range

Four ways treatment can be delivered.

01
Lightest option · Awake and calm

Happy gas

Nitrous oxide

A light, breathe-in sedation for milder anxiety. It wears off quickly, so there’s no fasting, no recovery period, and most people drive themselves home.

  • A much lighter alternative to sedation or GA
  • No fasting and no recovery time
  • You stay awake, relaxed and in control
  • You can usually drive yourself home
02
Deeper · Largely asleep, breathing on your own

IV sedation

Delivered by a medical anaesthetist

A deeper level of sedation given through a small drip. You’re largely unconscious but breathing independently, and most people remember little to nothing.

  • May be suitable for many adult procedures
  • Typically a faster recovery than general anaesthesia
  • Patient breathes independently
  • Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure
03
Deepest · Fully asleep

General anaesthesia

At Geelong Sleep Dentistry

The deepest level, with airway support equipment in place. It’s more often used for children, highly anxious patients, or longer surgical procedures.

  • Often considered for children
  • An option for highly anxious adult patients
  • Used for longer surgical procedures
  • Airway support equipment in place; recovery monitored in a dedicated area

The question we hear most

IV sedation, or general anaesthesia?

Both mean you’ll rest through treatment. The difference is the depth — and the treating anaesthetist recommends the level that’s clinically appropriate for you.

A general comparison. Your anaesthetist confirms what’s appropriate after assessment.

Who it suits

Sleep dentistry can be considered for patients who…

Suitability is always determined after a clinical and medical assessment. The list below is a guide to the kinds of situations where sleep dentistry is often raised as an option.

Live with significant dental anxiety

For whom even routine appointments cause distress, despite previous attempts with reassurance or happy gas.

Need extensive treatment

Where multiple appointments would otherwise be required — for example, several implant placements or a full-arch reconstruction.

Have had difficult past experiences

Where previous dental visits have left a lasting reluctance to return, regardless of how recent or distant.

Are children unable to tolerate care

Younger patients for whom routine appointments or local anaesthetic alone are not workable, after a paediatric-aware assessment.

Have medical or special needs

Where conditions affect the ability to remain still, follow instructions, or tolerate the dental setting comfortably.

Have a strong gag reflex

That makes routine examination, impressions or longer treatments difficult to complete.

A note before you start. These tools are educational aids only. They can’t assess your health, diagnose anxiety, or recommend a treatment. Your suitability for sleep dentistry — and the level of care that’s right for you — is always decided with your dentist and the treating anaesthetist after a clinical and medical assessment.

Understanding the cost

What’s claimable, and what’s not.

Sleep dentistry has a few moving parts. Here’s how they generally work — figures are always confirmed for your situation at consultation, and any amounts discussed are estimates only.

The dentistry — extractions, implants, fillings and so on — is generally claimable under your dental (extras) cover, the same as any other treatment. We can give you an itemised treatment plan with item numbers so you can check your entitlements with your fund before you commit.
Sleep dentistry involves a separate qualified medical anaesthetist. Some private health funds rebate part of this fee, and in certain circumstances a Medicare rebate may apply. This varies between funds, policies and individual clinical situations.
Treatment is delivered at the Geelong Sleep Dentistry day procedure facility, which has its own fee. Some funds rebate part of this. Coverage depends entirely on your level of hospital and extras cover.
If cover doesn’t stretch as far as you’d like, ask us about payment plan options — we’d rather help you plan the treatment than have you go without it.

The journey

Four stages, two teams, one point of care.

01

Initial consultation

You meet your Norlane dentist. We discuss your concerns, what treatment is needed, and whether sleep dentistry may be a suitable option for you. No commitment.

02

Pre-anaesthetic review

Geelong Sleep Dentistry’s anaesthetist reviews your medical history. Fasting and medication instructions are provided. Suitability is confirmed.

03

Treatment day

You attend the Geelong Sleep Dentistry facility. Your dentist and the anaesthetist are both present. The treatment is completed while you sleep.

04

Recovery & follow-up

You wake in recovery, are monitored until stable, and discharged to a responsible adult. A follow-up appointment is scheduled at our Norlane practice.

Treatment is performed at the Geelong Sleep Dentistry facility. Your Norlane dentist is with you throughout, and your follow-up is back at the practice.

The practical detail

Before, on the day, and after.

Preparing

Before your appointment

  • You’ll be given fasting instructions — typically no food or drink for several hours beforehand.
  • Any adjustments to your usual medications will be explained at your pre-anaesthetic review.
  • Arrange a responsible adult to drive you home and, ideally, stay with you afterwards.
  • Wear comfortable clothing, and leave jewellery and valuables at home.

The day

On the day

  • Arrive at the Geelong Sleep Dentistry facility at your scheduled time.
  • Your Norlane dentist and the anaesthetist are both present throughout.
  • You’re monitored the entire time, and treatment is completed while you rest.
  • You wake in a dedicated recovery area and are cared for until you’re stable.

Recovery

After & recovery

  • A responsible adult must drive you home and ideally stay with you for several hours.
  • Don’t drive, operate machinery, or sign legal documents for the rest of the day.
  • Light activity for 24 hours — plan a quiet day to rest and recover.
  • Your follow-up appointment is at the Norlane practice, where care continues with your own dentist.

Print & tick off

Your day-of checklist.

A simple checklist for you and whoever’s looking after you. Tick as you go, or print it for the fridge.

Before you leave home

For your carer, afterwards

Always follow your own instructions first. Your anaesthetist will give you personalised fasting, medication and aftercare guidance at your pre-anaesthetic review. If anything here differs from what you’ve been told, follow their instructions — and call us on (03) 5278 2666 if you’re unsure.

Four generations of Geelong dentistry, independently owned. Norlane Dental Aesthetics & Implants has been part of this community for over 50 years — and sleep dentistry is one more way we help people get the care they’ve been putting off.

About the practice
IV sedation is a deeper level of sedation in which the patient is largely unconscious but breathing independently. General anaesthesia is a deeper level still, with airway support equipment in place; it is more often used for children, anxious patients, or for longer surgical procedures. The treating anaesthetist recommends the level that is clinically appropriate.
Sleep dentistry is performed by a qualified medical anaesthetist, with monitoring throughout the procedure. As with any medical procedure, there are risks. A pre-anaesthetic assessment reviews your medical history and identifies any factors that may affect suitability. Outcomes and risks vary between individuals — your anaesthetist will discuss yours with you specifically.
Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure. Individual responses vary — some patients recall fragments of waking up in recovery, others recall nothing from the moment the medication began until they were home.
Before: you’ll be given fasting instructions (typically no food or drink for several hours beforehand) and any medication adjustments. After: a responsible adult must drive you home and ideally stay with you for several hours. You should not drive, operate machinery or sign legal documents for the rest of the day. Light activity for 24 hours is advised.
It can be suitable for children who are unable to tolerate routine dental care, after a clinical assessment. General anaesthesia is more commonly used for paediatric cases. The decision is made jointly by the dentist, the anaesthetist and the child’s parents or guardians — and it is never the only option discussed.
Coverage varies between health funds and individual policies. Some private health funds rebate part of the anaesthetist and facility fees. The dental treatment itself is generally claimable under dental cover. Our team can provide an itemised treatment plan to help you check with your fund. Ask us about payment plan options as well.
No referral is required. You can book a consultation directly with Norlane Dental, where we will discuss whether sleep dentistry may be a suitable option for you and arrange the pre-anaesthetic review.
